About 'The Sacred Grove'
At the confluence of the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers lies the awe-inspiring Sundarbans of West Bengal, a fragile ecosystem threatened by climate change.
My project pays homage to this endangered region by incorporating designs inspired by its unique flora and fauna, including true mangrove species, birdlife, and globally vulnerable species like the Bengal tiger (P. tigris), Ganges and Irrawaddy dolphins, and estuarine crocodile (C. porosus). These designs aim to raise awareness about the urgent need for conservation while celebrating the beauty of this ecosystem.
Adding to this, the uniqueness of the batik print in my collection lies in its innovation. Unlike traditional batik prints, which are often hand-drawn with no repeating patterns, these design features a seamless repeat unit, much like block printing. This hand-drawn precision highlights the extraordinary skill and craftsmanship of Bengal's artisans, blending artistry with purpose to promote both their heritage and the call for ecological preservation.
